Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile to Rank Higher : A Step-by-Step Guide

As Head of Sales at Talent-e, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-optimized LinkedIn profile can make all the difference. Whether it’s catching the eye of recruiters, attracting clients, or connecting with industry peers, your profile is often the first impression you make.
The tips I’m about to share come straight from my profile, and they’ve been proven to work. Let me show you how you can make your profile work for you.

1. Nail Your Headline

Your headline is your first impression. Don’t just settle for your job title—make it work harder by showing what you do and how you add value.

✔ Use keywords that match your industry
✔ Highlight your expertise and what makes you unique
✔ Keep it clear and impactful

Example: Thomas Goupil | Head of Sales at Talent-e | Helping Executives Build a Stronger Personal Brand on LinkedIn

2. Pick a Profile Picture That Works

Your photo matters—a lot. A great headshot can increase profile views and make you look approachable and professional.

✔ Make sure it’s high-quality and up-to-date
✔ Use good lighting and a clean background
✔ Dress appropriately for your industry

Here’s my LinkedIn profile picture, which is a great example of the tech industry.

I chose a shirt that’s both professional and comfortable, and the background is the signature blue color of Talent-e, making me easily identifiable with the brand. The clean, bright lighting ensures a clear image, and the overall style aligns with the tech industry’s more relaxed yet professional vibe. This approach might not be as fitting for more formal industries like banking, but it works perfectly for the innovative and dynamic world of tech.

3. Tell Your Story in the About Section

This is your chance to hook visitors. Instead of a dry career summary, make it engaging and easy to read.

✔ Keep it short and punchy—no walls of text
✔ Drop in industry-specific keywords to improve searchability
✔ Show some personality and share what drives you

4. Make Your Experience Pop

Your job history isn’t just a list—it’s proof of your impact. Focus on achievements, not just responsibilities.

✔ Use action verbs and measurable results (e.g., “Boosted sales by 30% in 6 months”)
✔ Highlight key projects and wins
✔ Add links, media, or presentations when relevant

5. Choose Your Skills Wisely

LinkedIn lets you list 50 skills, but quality beats quantity. Prioritize the ones that matter most for your goals.

✔ Mix hard and soft skills
✔ Keep them relevant to your next career move
✔ Update as you learn new things

6. Collect Strong Recommendations

Social proof builds trust. A few great recommendations go a long way.

✔ Ask colleagues, managers, or clients for endorsements
✔ Give them a heads-up on what you’d like them to highlight
✔ Offer to return the favor

Below is an example of a recommendation on the profile of Leonard’ Canitrot’s profile (Founder of Talent-e)

7. Stay Active on LinkedIn

Engagement boosts your visibility. Show up consistently by:

✔ Sharing industry insights and useful content
✔ Commenting on others’ posts to start conversations
✔ Writing short articles or personal takes on trends

8. Join and Participate in Groups

Groups help you expand your network and build credibility. Make the most of them by:

✔ Joining ones related to your industry
✔ Posting thoughtful comments and insights
✔ Sharing relevant resources and experiences

Below is an example of a LinkedIn group related to AI I joined to connect with peers in my field.

9. Customize Your LinkedIn URL

A clean, personalized URL looks more professional and is easier to share.

✔ Go to profile settings
✔ Click “Edit public profile & URL”
✔ Pick something simple—your name or personal brand works best

Example: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-goupil-sales-manager/

10. Keep Your Profile Fresh

LinkedIn isn’t a “set it and forget it” platform. Stay active and update regularly.

✔ Add new skills and certifications as you grow
✔ Update your job description if your role evolves
✔ Refresh your About section to reflect new goals

A strong LinkedIn profile opens doors.

Start with three small updates today—whether it’s tweaking your headline, refreshing your About section, or adding a new skill.

The more effort you put in, the more opportunities will come your way!
